WPIDS is the Portation of PHPIDS an PHP bases Intrusion Detection System by BlogSecurity.net. This is one of the few plugins for WP who can really protect you from harm(although it may not prevent you from everything). Nor does BlogSecurity.net or PHPIDS grant that if the Software is used your Blog will be unbreakable. WPIDS only runs on PHP5.1.6 and higher.
What is WPIDS and How does it Make your blog more safe ?
The plugin checks, all user driven input such as $_POST, $_GET, $_REQUEST PHP variables for patterns which can be used to break into your system. If an suspect Value is detected it will be removed. Each pattern has its own Impact value, if the Impact Value is bigger than something set you can stop the further execution of WP or even block the visiting IP totally from WP for a given timespan. Additional you can get an Email about an possible intrusion try, when the Impact value is bigger than your set Value.
How to Install WPIDS ?
Download your Copy of WPIDS from PHPIDS.org. Unzip the folder and upload it to your WP plugin folder. After you activated the Plugin you get a new Tab called WPIDS within the Plugin tab.

You can now set if you want to get an Email if the Impact is bigger than the given value. As well you can set on what Impact Level the request is blocked fully, and if the IP will then be blocked and how long this will be. As well you’ll see if there’s a newer filter set for PHPIDS, if so you should download the newer one and replace your Server version of default_filter.xml which is located within the IDS Subfolder of the WPIDS plugin. You should regular check the WPIDS page to see if there’s a newer filter Version, as only the latest filter rules grant the best ratio between security and less false positives.
Dependencies and Known Issues with WPIDS
As it’s a porting of PHPIDS you may check from time to time if there’s a newer Version of PHPIDS available or WPIDS, as well keep track on the filter updates. Depending on the code where PHPIDS is build with you need at least that your server runs with PHP5.1.6 or greater.
In the End ...?
Both PHPIDS and WPIDS are quite new, so many changes will surely take place. Anyway it seems to be an interesting Plugin/application as if it really can hold what they offer it will add to your Blog plenty of additional security.
