Anyway nowdays on your PC, probably a printer will be one of the more costlier items(provided its a good printer) and they get damaged very easily. And the problem is, you only use them when you need them. So you will never know they are not working properly unless you need them urgently :) With proper maintenance and a few tips, you can significantly reduce problems and increase the life of your printer.

The simplest hint I can give is to just print the pages you need.  Use the programs print preview screen to decide which page(s) to you want to print.   You should always power down your printer properly.  If you aren’t using the printer, turn it off.  The heat from the printer will contribute to drying the ink in the print cartridges faster and clogging the nozzles.  Also update the print drivers directly from the manufactures website every few months to ensure you have the latest software updates.  If the printer isn’t working properly, run the printer diagnostics.  Your printer is programmed to identify and resolve many potential problems.

A little simple preventive maintenance can greatly increase the life of your printer.  Dust will do a lot of damage to your printer.  You can use compressed air to blow the dust out of you your printer and also the area around your printer.  If you have a dog or cat that sheds, you should look into a dust cover.  Also, use a dust clothes to clean the outside of the printer, the hard drive, keyboard and table. The clogging of the printer heads are one of the most common problems.  By printing every week you keep fresh ink flowing and reduce the risk of a blockage.  It’s also important for your printer to breathe.  Keep paper and other equipment away from the printer’s air vents.

Problems with the print heads are the most common cause of printer breakdowns.  It’s important to periodically clean the heads to keep them from clogging with excess ink  Most printers have an internal cleaning function, which typically do not do a very good job.  You should supplement this process with routinely cleaning the print heads manually.  Take a Q-tip and dip in warm water.  Gently wipe away the excess ink and dirt.  Make sure to clean the connections on your printer as well.  Wait a few minutes to allow the print head connections to dry before putting the ink cartridges back in.place.

Whether you are using a refillable ink cartridge or a disposable cartridge, always makes sure it is snapped firmly into place.  Any leak could be disastrous for your printer.  Always use quality ink, whether a name brand or generic.  Many people today prefer to use refillable cartridges.  Be careful and check to make sure the cartridge is not damages and not leaking
It’s also good not to eat or drink near your printer.  A spill could cause severe damage.

Never try to force any moving part on your printer.  Covers, ink cartridges and paper trays should snap easily into place.  If paper is jammed, carefully remove and be carefully not to tear pieces off the sheet.

Always remember, If you treat your printer right it will last for many years, if you don't, than you have to pay the price. As usual, I will really appreciate if you can share your views on my suggestions and views.
