Tidy Up uses the HTML Tidy Project, it’s maintained by John Godley. In order to use the Plugin you need to be able to run executables from your webspace.

WHAT DOES IT?

The plugin runs the HTML Tidy software to check your posts, comments for valid HTML. If you like you can automatically let the software fix the HTML, if there are some. But as it may cause damage to your Website we don’t recommend automatically fixing. Note: This Plugin checks only your data like Posts, Comments and Excerps. It doesn’t check your Website as whole, so if your template isn’t proper HTML you’ll not be noticed by this application.

HOW TO INSTALL

Download Tidy Up from John Godleys website. Unzip the package and upload the Folder to your website. Activate the Plugin, when it’s activated you’ll get a New Tab within the Manage Tab. You should see now this admin area:

Now try to run it by Clicking the Greenbutton “Report”, if you see something like that:

The user who is used to access the file hasn’t the right to execute the file. The First two fails point to an Windows System, therefore you need to increase the rights for the tidy.exe file, so you need to give the needed privileges to the User(we can’t give more direct instructions as we don’t run a Windows Server).

The Failed 5 & 6 point to an access Problem with Linux, we need to give enough rights to the tidy.linux file. This can be done through an FTP application. Select the File and do now change the rights for the user World to read, execute this file(CHMOD 745). Mostly it should work the same for the Windows Server but we can’t tell. Now try to run the Plugin again you should now get something like that screen:

If the Post matches the HTML Standards, you’ll See the green row with Success. If it finds something against the HTML Standards, you’ll get an Warning which describes what caused the Error and mostly how to fix it as well. As well as warnings are only recommendations you can even get Fails, which are caused by Errors, these problems are really against the HTML Standard and should be fixed.

If you click the button “tidy” it will automatically fix the problems, by “edit” you’ll see something like that where you can edit it at once without changing the Page.

After you made the changes you should run the Plugin again as no instant recheck of the changed Post is made. So you can loop through every Post and made it valid HTML.

In the End ...
If you want to run your website with valid HTML we recommend you to use this Plugin. If you have just a few comments & posts to validate every month you should made possible changes by yourself rather than the automatically. When you run some high traffic blog, that behave would cost you many time…therefore you should maybe use the automatically tidy process, but make a backup of your data for the case it should fail.
