So after covering 2 ASP articles(this and this, in case you are curious to know) I am back to Wordpress Plugin reviews.
The Plugin is originally created by Owen Winkler, who don’t support it at the moment(his version doesn’t work with WP2.1+. The Version we discuss here is developed by Thomas Schneider, it works as well with WP2.1+ and is based upon Owen Winklers Plugin.
Since WP 2.0, WP offers the ability to use Roles. Each role holds a bunch of capabilities the user with such a role can perform. The Administrator role has all rights, a simple subscriber is only allowed to view posts & comments. Wordpress comes by default with some Userroles, but these can’t be changed nor can be newer ones added. The role manager now allows it to create new Roles, with a given set of capabilities or change existent roles. Furthermore you can give each User additional rights, although he wouldn’t have them within its group. It works the other way as well you can remove rights for some Users, although he would have them within his group normally. So it’s an advanced Userrights Management for Wordpress.
Download the Plugin from Thomas Website, unzip, upload and activate the Plugin. A new tab is created within User called Roles.
Within this Page you see all current existent roles, you can change every roles rights by simply clicking on the button to the left of the depending text to toggle it on or off. The Userlevel defines what Plugins can be used from that Role, some Plugins have the level 10 so only the administrator can run them one with the Level 0 can be run from everyone(as long as the role has the right to use Plugins). You can even rename the Roles to some other names you want. At the Bottom of the page you can create new roles with the set of capabilities you set by checking the Checkboxes(or leaving them unchecked).
When you now change Users within the Authors & Users page you can set their rights separately from their role. So you can add additional rights, or deny some of the Role given rights.
The rights the User holds within his group are showed bold, if the right isn’t allowed for him it’s displayed bold with additional italic formatting and the color red. If you give the User additional rights who the group he belongs to, don’t have the depending checkbox is only checked. At the bottom of the Page you see the list of additional Capability changes. If a right is denied it holds a “Denied:” before the rights name, if it’s added the additional rights name is displayed.
Only works with Wordpress 2.0 or higher
What do you need the Role Management for Wordpress if you can’t use it as you need it? This Plugin offers you anything you want and need to modify roles as you need them or to give Special users additional rights, or to deny some of its Group rights. It’s nicely displayed and all needed information is showed to you. A must have!
