Adobe Systems Inc. launched a free online version of the popular photo-editing software Photoshop. Photoshop Express, as it’s being called, will be completely Web-based and accessible with any type of computer, operating system, and browser.

An analyst at Jon Peddie Research said that because Web-based software has become so popular, Adobe knew it had to respond before it fell behind the other software developers.

Web-based software services have become a sticking trend that began with email programs but are now used to create and manage content and entire operating systems. Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and many other companies provide these services for consumers.

Adobe hopes to increase its name recognition with a new generation of consumers who edit, store, and share photos online. While Photoshop requires training, Photoshop Express is easier to learn and is currently being offered in a “beta” test version. User comments are also being accepted in order to improve the service.

Photoshop Express is part of a marketing strategy to generate up-sell opportunities. Adobe hopes consumers will upgrade to its boxed software.

The free service offers many editing options such as red-eye removal, cropping and rotating functions, lighting adjustments, and many more features.
