iPod picturesGenerally, we expect to have the program that manages one's iPod to be integrated with a media playing solution. This is the case of iTunes or Amarok for instance, which both offer an extensive range of features for managing MP3 players.

However, there are several solutions for those who would prefer a stand-alone program for managing media players. Gtkpod is one such solution. It is a free, open-source, GTK-based iPod management program. Installing and using Gtkpod is quite straightforward.

Here is a quick step-by-step summary of the entire procedure:

Step 1. Obtain and install Gtkpod. Since Gtkpod is quite well-known, chances are your distribution already has a package for it. In the case of Ubuntu, installing pre-packed packages is done by using APT:

$ sudo apt-get install gtkpod

If no package is available for your distribution, you will need to fetch the source from the project's website and compile it by yourself. Details for this are included in the INSTALL file that comes with the source code.

Step 2. Once Gtkpod is installed, you can plug your iPod into the USB port and launch Gtkpod. Click on Load iPod(s) on the main toolbar. This will open a dialog box, which allows you to select a mountpoint for the iPod, as well as the exact iPod model you have.

Clicking OK may issue a warning about iTunesDB.ext not being found – you can safely ignore the warning.

Step 3. Let's add some music. Click on the Files button, navigate to your music folders and select as many files as you wish. Or, if you prefer, you can drag-and-drop files from Rhythmbox onto the Gtkpod window. To have the changes committed to the iPod, click Save Changes.

There are several other operations you may wish to try. Gtkpod allows you to format your iPod, to synchronize and manage several playlists, and it can also perform basic sanity checks on your MP3 player to make sure it is functioning correctly.

The range of features itself is very wide. Unfortunately, gtkpod is – as its name says – restricted only to iPod players. The development team does not plan to make it work with any other players, which is quite unfortunate. However, if you do own an iPod, Gtkpod may just be the perfect music management solution around.
