Ok, I am not sure when exactly did this happened (it's not very old, thats for sure) but Big Directories like Alive and Aviva have lost serious page ranks from PR7(than to 6) to current PR4. In fact my friend Amit's Directory Gii also seems to have come to PR4 from PR6!
It seems now Google is dictating terms and its pretty obvious that they have decided to closing on Directories who are purchasing links to boost there rankings and to the sites who are selling links. It is a huge thing for SEO industry and small players who were making a decent earnings by selling links.
But I can see that none of the sites have lost traffic and most likely most of them are still topping in serps for there keywords. So in short, Google has just reduce the PageRank of the sites who were selling links (atleast for now), scaling down everything by say 1 to 2 units.
I am not sure that this will put an end to link purchase fully but ya, link purchase to boost PageRank is surely going to die.
