Because data protection is very important for consumers, many companies are working on technology that would prevent that information from leaking out. Intel is one company that is working with this effort. Although details are scarce, reports say that Intel plans to release anti-theft technology for laptops during the fourth quarter of this year.

Dadi Perlmutter, the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Mobility Group, says that in the case of a theft, the Intel Anti-Theft Technology (ATT) will “basically lock the system, lock the disk, so people cannot be maliciously using and getting the data.”

Stolen laptops that result in lost data is unfortunately, a growing concern. This technology, which appears to render both the processor and storage inaccessible, is geared toward alleviating these fears of valuable corporate or personal data getting into the wrong hands when a laptop is lost or stolen.

ATT would guarantee that stolen laptops are only bootable by the owner, which would also protect the contents on the computer. Some thieves might try replacing the hard drive in order to gain access, but the computer would still not be accessible since this technology is tied to the operating system’s login process.

Intel also wants to incorporate a tracking device into ATT in the event that a laptop is stolen. Other companies including Lenovo Group, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, McAfee, and Phoenix Technologies are working with Intel to make ATT available by the end of the year.
