While Google has not yet released its Google Android or even its sales predictions for devices based on its mobile operating system, still a Google executive has already given the product an expectation to live up to.

After speaking at the Emerging Communications Conference in the Silican Valley, Rich Miner, Google’s Group Manager for Mobile Platforms, said Android-based sales devices would exceed that of sales of Apple’s iPhone.

Apple sold four million iPhones in the first seven months of its release.

Miner said:

“Once you have devices out there from Motorola, HTC, Samsung, and so on, there's a much larger potential market on Android than for the iPhone… there's a single manufacturer, it's targeted at a particular demographic, and it falls far short of the 1 billion mobile phones sold every year worldwide.”

Google unveiled its Android platform in November of 2007, with a complete stack of open standards for mobile devices. Incidentally, Google is holding an “Android Developer’s Challenge” with $10 million dollars worth of prizes for any company or person producing innovative and stimulating apps.

Earlier this month, Apple opened the iPhone platform to third-party apps and has already announced that SDK has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. However, Miner says restrictions still apply that limit valuable apps for the iPhone.

Google reported last month Android SDK has been downloaded 750,000 times.

“That's for a device that doesn't even exist yet,” said Miner.

Miner stands by his theory that the iPhone and Android are targeted for different markets.

“It's not a competitive thing -- it's great that people are finally building tools so all of these third-party applications can be built and get out there. [If I were a developer] I'd certainly be looking at the iPhone, and if you believe there will be lots of Android phones out there, as we do, I'd be developing for both platforms.” – Rich Miner
