Exec-php is one of those Wordpress plugins that if you have a use for it, it will be a godsend. For the majority of people however, you’ll have no interest in it, and you will never find an opportunity where it could come in handy.

In a nutshell, the plugin allows you insert a block of php code into a post, and have it execute correctly. It’s a plug and play plugin that works silently in the background, and doesn’t even require any initial configuration settings. All Exec-PHP really does, is executes code inside of <?php ?> tags by simply wrapping your entire post into <?php?> tags and then pass it to the PHP eval() function. This way, there is never a need to parse the code within, or by, the actual plugin itself.

Now there are other plugins which can offer the same or similar functionality. These include RunPHP, EZStatic, PHP-EXEC and several others. I have always found however, that Exec-php does what I need it to do most easily, and more importantly, most reliably.

You do need to keep a few things in mind to ensure the plugin works correctly. Exec-PHP can execute PHP code inside any new or existing pages and posts. To have code execute properly, just enter the PHP code as you would on a normal PHP file. However, you must ensure that you’ve disable the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, as well as disable the "Wordpress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically" option within in your Wordpress control panel under Options. If your not sure where the WYSIWYG option is (as many people have asked), then you simply need to look under the preferences section of your individual user account. A simple checkbox click, and you’ll be set.

After being installed, the plugin is restricted to, "Administrator" and "Editor" privilege level. To allow others to access the capabilities of the plugin, you simply need to make sure the “exec_php” capability is set to the specific user or role.

Those are pretty much the basics, and should allow you to get up and running pretty quickly. Most people who use this type of plugin will be rather proficient with everything they need to do.
