If you run a large network of Wordpress blogs, than The Auto Upgrade plugin is priceless. I have a lot of sites, and even worse, I’m a security paranoid. That means whenever there’s a new Wordpress upgrade, or there’s a security vulnerability revealed, I have a long day ahead of me. Upgrading Wordpress manually isn’t hard, but it is time consuming.

The Auto Upgrade plugin however, makes it simple. It can either run completely automatically and never require input from you, or it can be run with a few clicks if you’d like to control when the updates are made.

The plugin will automatically backup your current files and database, and allow you to download those, or store them on the server. If then proceeds to de-activate your plugins and then re-activates them after the upgrade is completed. In between, it downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and then will uncompress it on the server, enters maintenance mode on the blog and finishes it from there.

Installation is no more complicated than a regular plugin installation. Download the zip file, extract the content, than upload the folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory. Hit up the Plugins menu in your Wordpress administration, and activate it.

Using it is no more difficult. Go to the Manage menu, then Automatic upgrade. From here, you can either click on a button to run the upgrade instantly, or activate options which will allow the plugin to run in the background, to ensure your blog is always up to date with the latest version.

If the concept is something you find interesting from a technical point of view, you may want to check out http://technosailor.com/my-script-for-auto-wordpress-upgrade/ as well. This is a standalone script that does a similar job. You should only use something like this however, if you’re very familiar with the internal workings of Wordpress. For most people, the plugin will be much, much better suited to your need. I think I’m pretty fluent in all aspects of Wordpress, even some of the programming technical aspects, but I find the plugin is still the best option for me.

Bottom line, is that if your run several Wordpress blogs, or even just run one and prefer to keep the software continuously up to date, than you need to run the Wordpress Auto Upgrade Plugin. It will without a doubt, save you time and money over the long run.
