Tags like keywords, description and author were introduced to help bots and crawlers know what the page is about. Anyway later on this feature was abused brutally by spammers and nowdays search engines don't care at all about keyword tags and very little about others. This whole idea of web 1.0 was to make the web a little more organized and to make it identifiable.
